New Hampshire State Parks

Did you know that New Hampshire has 93 public parks, beaches, historic sites, and other natural areas in our park system? That's a lot of swimming, hiking, biking, learning, climbing, and exploring to do without ever leaving the 603! This year, our family bought a New Hampshire State Parks Family Pass to inspire us to explore our own state. Our goal is to visit at least two state parks a month, documenting what we loved (and didn't) about each one.

I'm excited to share our park adventures and misadventures with you, including the new plants, animals, and insects my son and I identify along the way. We have been loving iNaturalist's Seek app, which helps us get to know our natural world. Join us on our NH State Parks Staycation!

State Park Tips

Tip 1
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Don’t show up at a state park without doing your research. The NH State Parks website has all the information you need about each state park, including what activities are allowed in the parks, whether camping is available, and whether pets are allowed. Some parks get really crowded during certain seasons and calling ahead will ensure you can get in. It’s always helpful to download and/or print the parks map from the website as well so you aren’t wandering around looking for bathrooms, trails, or parking.

Tip 2
BE PREPARED

Packing the right clothing and gear can be the difference between a great day and a terrible one, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Decide beforehand whether you’ll be biking, hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, or just sitting on the beach so you know what to pack. Make sure to check the weather and bring sunscreen or rain jackets or whatever else you might need. It’s always a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car and in your backpack so you’ll be ready for anything. Don’t forget your trail map and phone or camera!

Tip 3
GO WILD!

Most people visiting state parks stay in the well-worn areas near the parking lots and campgrounds. Explore further afield and you may actually get to see some real wildlife and explore new sights and sounds. Follow the paths less taken and you’ll get to know New Hampshire in a whole new way. I suggest using a wildlife and plant identification app or field guide so you can learn while you explore. And don’t forget to share your adventures with family and friends. The more people enjoy New Hampshire’s natural beauty, the more people will want to protect it.
