Summer in New Hampshire
Summer! The warm sun and the cool lake. The hot sand and the cold ocean. Summer is a season of adventure in New Hampshire, so go explore the seashore, hike some mountains, and go jump in a river or a lake! Enjoy some beets, carrots, parsnips, herbs, greens, strawberries and peas early in the summer, and get ready for the late summer feast of blueberries, melons, peaches, raspberries, green beans, broccoli, corn, eggplant, garlic, cucumbers, onions, peppers, potatoes, zucchini, and tomatoes. Fresh food is everywhere in the summer!

GARDENS
Early summer is the busiest time in the garden. Every day something new sprouts or blossoms or bears food. Flower gardens, herb gardens, pollinator gardens, vegetable gardens, container gardens... even if you only have a windowsill, give yourself the gift of green! It's good for the soul. If you're ready for it, we share lots of information on this site for growing your own food and food for your pollinator friends.
WEEDS & PESTS
Summertime is when everything is growing like crazy, including the weeds and the pests. If your garden needs some TLC, check out Backyard 101 for eco-friendly tips and ideas.
CSA & PUBLIC GARDENS
If you want the fruits and veggies, but don't have the space or time for a garden, CSAs and Farmer's Markets are great alternatives. Want some inspiration? You can visit some of New Hampshire's wonderful public gardens or natural meadows.
WEATHERIZE YOUR HOME
Weatherizing your home is the best way to keep the heat out during the summer and the heat in during the winter. If you’re desperate for some AC during the day, visit a public place already running one. Go to the library, a bookstore, a grocery store, or a restaurant or cafe to cool off. If you can, get yourself a cool drink (in a reusable cup) while you’re there or make yourself an afternoon ice coffee.
KEEP THE HEAT OUT!
Keep out the heat! Here in New Hampshire, it is almost always cool at night even when it is really hot during the day. In order to regulate the temperature inside your house, you can keep the windows open all night, running a box fan if you want, and then close all the windows once things heat up in the morning.
STOCK THE FRIDGE
Stock your fridge and freezer with cool drinks and snacks, like homemade popsicles, gazpacho, and sun tea. Keep your oven and stovetop powered down and choose sandwiches and cold snacks instead. You can also cook outside on the grill to keep your house cool.
